GENERAL GUIDELINES

  • All disposables must be placed at the curb and/or in plain view from the street by 6 am on collection day.  Reston Association covenants require that residents' disposables be hidden from view until the evening preceding collection day.  Emptied containers must be again hidden from view by the end of the collection day.

  • All disposables (and especially food waste) must be securely tied and placed in secure containers appropriate to discourage scavenging from wildlife.

  • Trash and recycling MUST be processed and disposed of separately.  Clean cardboard especially must not be disposed of with trash If you have questions on what constitutes trash or recycling, please refer to this link: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/publicworks/recycling-and-trash

  • If a pickup is inadvertently missed or if you have comments about vendor performance, please contact the cluster board.  The board needs to be aware of and aggregate these concerns.

  • Trash

Trash set out for collection will include general household trash, glass materials of any kind, small furniture, and household equipment.  You may not dispose of potentially hazardous materials with trash or recycling.  These materials may include but are not limited to paints, fluorescent light bulbs, automotive fluids, solvents, batteries, poisons, acids, caustics, explosives, and other dangerous materials.  If you are unsure if a material is considered hazardous, please refer to this link: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/publicworks/recycling-trash/household-hazardous-waste.  Also. you may not dispose of construction materials such as concrete and bricks, medical waste, dead animals, manure, tree stumps, mulch, sod, dirt, stone, or rocks. If you have any questions about how to dispose of a certain material please contact Champion

Disposal of many items, including hazardous materials, is not managed by the cluster and must be managed by the homeowner.  Fairfax County maintains two disposal centers to dispose of many materials which will not be picked up with trash.  The closest location is the I-66 Transfer Station - location, hours and a complete list of disposable items and instructions may be found here: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/publicworks/recycling-trash/i-66-transfer-station

  • Yard Waste
Effective in 2021, plastic bags can not be used for yard waste.

Yard waste will be picked up on the same day as trash and should be placed in separate containers (clearly marked “YARD WASTE”) or biodegradable bags    Brush shall be cut in four-foot lengths, with limbs no larger than 3” inches in diameter. Brush shall be tied in bundles no larger than two feet in diameter.

  • Recycling

Recyclable materials MUST be separated from trash and disposed of in a recycling bin/can, in a paper bag, or in the case of newspapers and magazines, tied securely with twine.  Shredded documents and any other small paper items should be bagged.  Recyclable materials include "clean" cardboard (e.g. no greasy pizza boxes), plastic items (labeled 1-7), metal food and beverage cans, and paper materials.  Glass jars and bottles are not recyclable and must be disposed of with the trash or recycled separately by delivering them yourself to a county glass recycling site (the closest location is the Reston South Park and Ride located at 2531 Reston Pkwy, Herndon, VA 20191).  Similarly, plastic grocery bags are not recyclable but may be recycled by returning them to many area grocery stores.  For a complete list of recyclable materials, please refer to this link: If you have questions on what constitutes trash or recycling, refer to this link: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/publicworks/recycling-and-trash
